Our Comment:

Acetylcysteine has become an important drug because so many people with airway diseases wish to use a drug that dissolves mucus. Similarly to other mucolytic agents, acetylcysteine does not demonstrate convincing evidence of efficiency. It is important not to neglect other, potentially more efficient drugs such as bronchodilators or possibly antibiotics. The value of acetylcysteine as an antidote against paracetamol intoxication is undisputed.
