*During a long-term administration the effect of allopurinol is chiefly determined by its primary metabolite oxypurinol (which has a half-life of 15 to 21 hours or more).

To be taken after meals. Aim of the therapy: uric acid level below 350 µmol/l. Prophylaxis of hyperuricemia in leukemia and lymphoma: 200 to 800 mg/day; this treatment should start at least three days before the chemotherapy. Abundant supply of liquids!
