Amoxycillin: Adverse Reactions

A maculopapular rash appears in 5 to 10% of the treated subjects; the cause of the rash is not clearly established. Diarrhea is similarly common. A pseudomembranous colitis, however, is rare.

Actual allergic reactions (urticarial exanthema, fever, Quincke's edema, asthma) only occur in about 2% of the cases; an anaphylactic shock is rare. Isolated cases of other skin reactions (pemphigus) and interstitial nephritis have been observed.

In combination with clavulanic acid amoxycillin causes diarrhea much more frequently; in some cases it can even lead to cholestatic hepatitis.

Amoxycillin: Interactions

Amoxycillin can be detrimental to the antibiotic activity of aminoglycosides: in vitro if it is administered in the same infusion or in vivo in persons with renal failure. Oral contraceptives normally stay effective under amoxycillin (according to some authors, however, a complementary, e.g. mechanical contraception is recommended).
