Amoxycillin is still a versatile and relatively well tolerated antibiotic. Compared to penicillin it is advantageous because of its broader range. When used alone, amoxycillin is better tolerated than co-trimoxazole. In combination with clavulanic acid (Augmentin) however, it causes more adverse effects. The combination is not effective against all ß-lactamase producing bacteria (e.g. Enterobacter), causes many side-effects (diarrhea), and is very expensive.
