Our Comment:
Atenolol is normally my choice of beta-blocker. Atenolol is well tolerated, not very expensive, and it has a remarkable record: its long-term use is documented convincingly for coronary heart diseases and hypertension alike. It is equal in its efficiency to most alternatives and better compatible compared to e.g. calcium antagonists of the dihydropyridine group. Compared to metroprolol it has a more constant bioavailability. One has to be cautious when heart failure or asthma have been diagnosed!
