Captopril: Adverse Reactions

The low doses of captopril prescribed nowadays will hardly cause more side-effects than other ACE inhibitors. Like these, captopril causes a dry cough in at least 5 to 10% of the treated individuals. Less frequent are skin rashes, taste disturbances, proteinuria and symptoms of a hypotension.

Neutropenias and angioneurotic edemas are rare but hazardous. All side-effects occur more frequently in subjects with existing renal disorders or collagen-vascular disease. In these patients a drop in blood pressure and renal failure can occur, especially if there is body fluid deficiency.

Captopril: Interactions

If there is simultaneous administration of captopril and potassium-saving diuretics or potassium salts as well as cyclosporin, a hyperkalemia could develop. Captopril can increase the nephrotoxicity of lithium salts. Concomitantly administered anti-inflammatory agents reduce the antihypertensive effect of captopril.
