| Chlorhexidine: Adverse Reactions
Dangerous anaphylactic reactions with bronchospasms and generalized urticaria are very rare and are apparently most likely after use on mucous membranes. Normal skin allergies are infrequent.
After continual oral use a (mostly reversible) discoloration of the teeth and the tongue has been observed in several occasions. Taste disturbances and bleeding gums are rare. Accidental swallowing can cause nausea.
The use of concentrations higher than 0.1% is toxic to the eyes (keratitis, visual impairment).
Dilution with non-sterile water can cause a contamination with resistant germs (e.g. pseudonomas).
