Chlorthalidone (like the related thiazides diuretics) is still a first class basis for the treatment of hypertension. The desired lowering of the blood pressure is achieved with low doses (12.5 to 25 mg/day, possibly only every other day) that cause few side-effects. Diuretics and beta-blockers are the only substances for which long-term efficacy has been convincingly documented. However, it is important that a developing hypokalemia is corrected through the diet or with drugs.
