Our Comment:
The good antitussive effect of codeine is unambiguous. However, it is not clear whether the drug is superior to dextromethorphan (which probably has fewer risks) for a persistent cough. There are only few comparative studies and they do not allow safe conclusions. The strong constipating effect of codeine is often a handicap. It is a pity that the antitussive and analgesic potential of codeine is so often abused in irrational combinations.
