| Dexamethasone: Risk Groups

Pregnant
women: In animal experiments high doses have teratogenic effects. However, it can be given when indications are unambiguous. For the prevention of respiratory distress syndrome: 12 mg/day, 1 week before birth.

Nursing
mothers: Is probably
eliminated through breast milk. Even if the amounts are probably marginal,
most specialists recommend weaning.
|
|
Children:
Acute therapy, depending on the indication for 1 to 5 days: 0.6 to 1.0 mg/kg/day, divided in 2 to 4 doses. Avoid long-term administration. |
|
Elderly
people: Begin with the smallest initial dose. There is a high risk of side-effects accompanying long-term treatment (osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension). |
|
Renal
failure: Dose adjustment is probably not necessary (metabolism is accelerated). |
|
Liver
insufficiency: When there is advanced insufficiency a dose reduction by 50% is indicated. |
