Slowly but surely the importance of digitalis glycosides is dwindling. I still administer digoxin regularly for tachycardial atrial fibrillation. Problems arise given the narrow therapeutic applicability and the great potential for interaction. Many patients with cardiac insufficiencies can be treated adequately with diuretics, ACE inhibitors or other vasodilators. However, the unpremeditated withdrawal of digoxin is not advisable for stable patients.
