Furosemide: Pharmacology

Furosemide is a sulfonamide diuretic. Its effect is based on the inhibition of the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle. The elimination of potassium, magnesium, calcium, and — to a lesser extent — bicarbonates is increased. Unlike the thiazide diuretics, the loop diuretics are still effective when the renal functions are severely limited.
