Our Comment:
Considering the marginal advantages and the likelihood of a slightly increased risk of hypoglycemia compared to other sulphonylurea antidiabetic drugs (e.g. glipizide), it is a difficult task to rationally justify the popularity of glibenclamide. The physicians' inclination towards antidiabetics that do not have a clearly established use is certainly related to the fact that a diabetes diet causes great problems in many people. Nevertheless, the attention should be focused on the diet (and the restriction of calories).
