Lactulose: Risk Groups

Pregnant women:
Can be given in small doses.

Nursing mothers:
No known problems. Can be given.

Children:
Is tolerated by children. Usual dose for neonates and infants: 1.6-3.3 g (2.5 to 5 ml) once or twice daily. School children: 5-10 g (7.5 to 15 ml) daily.

Elderly people:
Efficacy in the elderly is well documented.

Renal failure:
No special problems are known.

Liver insufficiency:
Used in connection with portal-systemic encephalopathy: cf. indications!
