Levothyroxine: Risk Groups

Pregnant women:
Women treated for hypothyroidism sometimes necessitate higher doses of thyroxine during pregnancy: monitor TSH!

Nursing mothers:
Can be given; however, the amounts traced in breast milk are not sufficient for a substitution in case of hypothyroidism in the neonate!

Children:
Early substitution of hypothyroidism is substantial. Daily dose: 6 months and younger 10 µg/kg, 6 to 12 months 8 µg/kg, 1 to 5 years 6 µg/kg, 5 to 10 years 4 µg/kg.

Elderly people:
Increased cardiovascular risk. Initial daily dose 25 µg; increase by 25 µg at the earliest after two weeks.

Renal failure:
No dose adjustment necessary.

Liver insufficiency:
No dose adjustment necessary.
