Metformin: Contraindications

Impaired renal functions and situations that could lead thereto (severe infections, surgery, intravenous pyelography). Cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis. Alcoholism. Advanced cardiovascular or general diseases.

Metformin: Cautions

An adequate dietary treatment should be tested before a therapy with oral antidiabetic agents is started. Regular laboratory monitoring of the renal and hepatic functions and (annually) of vitamin B12 status is indicated. Consider acidosis if there is a sudden occurrence or deterioration of nausea and diarrhea!
