| Metformin: Risk Groups

Pregnant
women: No unambiguous risks are known. However, diabetic women should usually be treated with insulin during pregnancy.

|
Nursing
mothers: Is excreted through breast milk. Risk is not clear: metformin is better avoided. |
|
Children:
No indications. Diabetes usually requires treatment with insulin in children and adolescents. |
|
Elderly
people: Very close observance of the contraindications is necessary. Better avoided in high age. |
|
Renal
failure: Contraindicated! A normal creatinine concentration is required for a treatment. This should be monitored regularly during treatment (e.g. every 6 months). |
|
Liver
insufficiency: Contraindicated when insufficiency is advanced. |
