| Metronidazole: Risk Groups

Pregnant
women: Even though
there are no clear indications of teratogenic effects, metronidazole
ought to be avoided in the first trimester.
|
|
Nursing
mothers: Relatively high concentrations in breast milk (like in plasma), it should therefore be avoided. Nursing possible 24 hours after a single dose. |
|
Children:
Daily dose: 20-40 mg/kg, divided in three doses. Neonates: initially 15 mg/kg, later 7.5 mg/kg/day (i.v.). |
|
Elderly
people: Caution with neurological diseases (risk of cramps). Generally no dose adjustment necessary. |
|
Renal
failure: Dose reduction recommended because of biologically active metabolite. |
|
Liver
insufficiency: Increase of plasma levels likely because of the predominantly hepatic metabolism. Reduce dose! |
