Mesalazine Tables:

Pharmacokinetics

Bioavailability Peak plasma level Plasma half-life Active metabolites Elimination
variable* 2-50% variable* 1 hour probably none extrarenal
*The local availability of mesalazine in the inflamed intestinal regions is therapeutically important. Systemically, only 2% of mesalazine is available from olsalazine, and to 25 to 50% from sulphasalazine and the different galenic special preparations of mesalazine. Maximum serum levels vary dependent on the preparation.

ulcerative colitis oral 400-500 mg* 6 to 8 hours 250-500 mg* 8 to 12 hours
*This dosage is valid for mesalazine preparations and olsalazine; sulphasalazine doses are higher (during episodes 3 to 4 times 1 g/day). The dosage of the other preparations can also be increased for severe cases. The high dosage for acute therapy is upheld until a remission is achieved (usually several months).
