Methotrimeprazine: Adverse Reactions

Methotrimeprazine occasionally causes lif- threatening agranulocytosis. Neuroleptic malignant syndromes are also very rare.

In general, the side-effects of methotrimeprazine are not clearly documented. However, one has to expect the entire spectrum of neuroleptic side-effects. Orthostatic hypotension and exaggerated sedation are particularly common. Parkinsonian symptoms, weight gain, skin reactions and anticholinergic effects (e.g. dry mouth), impaired temperature regulation, tardive dyskinesia, cholestasis, lens opacities and retinopathies have been observed.

Methotrimeprazine: Interactions

Like other neuroleptic agents, methotrimeprazine can cause a strong inhibition of polymorhpic hepatic enzymes, which are responsible for the metabolism of debrisoquine and many other drugs. Other interactions result from its effects in the central nervous system (cf. haloperidol, thioridazine).
