| Methotrimeprazine: Indications
Even though methotrimeprazine can be used for the treatment of schizophrenia
like other neuroleptic agents, it is often used on non-psychotic patients.
Thanks to its strong sedative effect in small doses, it is well suitable
for the treatment of anxiety states. Whether it really differs
from other sedative neuroleptic agents in this respect has not yet been
documented in controlled studies.
In the USA, methotrimeprazine is approved expressly as an injection
for the treatment of pain. But even this indication is not based
on controlled studies; the analgesic effect (which is similar to that
of opiates) may at least in part be explained with the sedation. Just
like methotrimeprazine, other neuroleptic agents, e.g. chlorprothixen,
can be elements of a therapy plan for obstinate pain. However, it would
be desirable to establish more closely the relative benefits of these
drugs e.g. for cancer patients.
Methotrimeprazine as a nightly sedative (for subjects without psychotic diseases) has not yet been adequately compared to benzodiazepines.
