Methotrimeprazine is a phenothiazine derivative called levomepromazin in German-speaking countries. Like other neuroleptic agents, it probaly acts through a blockade of the central nervous dopamine D2 receptors. It has pronounced sedative action but causes relatively limited anticholinergic effects. Additional differences to other neuroleptic agents have not been safely established.
