Nifedipine: Pharmacology

Nifedipine, prototype of the dihydropyridines, inhibits the influx of calcium ions into cardiac and vascular muscle cells like diltiazem and verapamil. On the contrary to these two drugs, nifedipine reduces the peripheral arterial vascular resistance and releases coronary artery spasms. Nifedipine thus has hypotensive and antianginal properties.
