Oxazepam frequently causes sedation of the central nervous system, which reveals itself with torpor, vertigo, reduced attention span or prolonged reaction time. These symptoms are largely dose dependent. Therapeutic doses do not significantly influence respiratory functions.

Other side-effects are dry mouth, nausea, and skin rashes, and rarely jaundice. Anterograde amnesia and paradoxical reactions (excitement, aggressivity) are not as common as with most other benzodiazepines.

However, oxazepam can lead to dependence within few weeks, like all the other benzodiazepines. Sudden withdrawal following long treatment often causes withdrawal symptoms (possibly convulsions).

Oxazepam: Interactions

Combined with other centrally sedative depressants (including alcohol!), oxazepam may cause excessive impairment of the central functions (respiratory functions!).
