Paracetamol has become accepted as an analgesic. As a rule it is equipotent to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). It should be given preference to the latter in children with viral infections. Combinations (e.g. with codeine) are sometimes better active than paracetamol alone. However, a long-term treatment with combined preacettions is not recommended. The problems associated to paracetamol are its hepatotoxicity and the suspected nephrotoxicity (long-term administration).
