| Prednisolone: Pharmacology
Prednisolone, and the biologically equivalent prednisone, are prototypes of the therapeutically used glucocorticoids. Corticosteroids bind with specific intracellular receptors, which leads to the activation and suppression of specific genes. Therapeutically administered prednisolone has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, it influences the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids and it inhibits the adrenal cortex. Compared to natural cortisol, prednisolone has a significantly weaker mineralocorticoid effect.
