Prednisolone: Risk Groups

Pregnant women:
Can be given if indication is unambiguous. Risks for the child: malformations (?), inhibition of intra-uterine growth, suppression of the adrenal cortex or the immune defense.

Nursing mothers:
Can be given. Concentrations in breast milk are relatively low. Following single doses of more than 20 mg: no nursing for 4 hours.

Children:
Increased risks (obesity, growth retardation): avoid long-term administration if possible!
Acute therapy: 1 to 2 mg/kg/day.

Elderly people:
Low dosage, mind the risk of osteoporosis!

Renal failure:
Plasma levels may be increased: some specialists recommend a dose reduction, others do not consider it necessary.

Liver insufficiency:
Significantly increased plasma levels if there is advanced insufficiency; dose may have to be reduced.
