Propranolol: Risk Groups

Pregnant women:
No teratogenic effect is known. However, harmlessness is not safely established. Monitor neonates for symptoms of ß-blockade.

Nursing mothers:
Only small amounts in breast milk. Monitor neonates for symptoms of ß-blockade.

Children:
Individual dosage: 1-4 mg/kg/day in 3 to 4 doses. Intravenous emergency therapy same as for adults.

Elderly people:
Propranolol frequently has a weaker hypotensive effect in the elderly than in younger subjects.

Renal failure:
No dose adjustment necessary.

Liver insufficiency:
Bioavailability increases with liver insufficiency: adjust dose!
