Our Comment:
Dextromethorphan is obviously an easily tolerated cough medicine. It does not feature the usual risks of 'normal' opioids. Nevertheless, one has to emphasize the fact that this drug is hardly documented at all. There is no clarity on the best dose nor on the duration of its effects (much less its action in high risk groups). Whether it can be more than an antitussive agent will have to be demonstrated by clinical research in the coming years.
